I hope you all used your service learning skills during Go green day! =) hee~

I've got a few things to say

(1) Thank you!

A BIG THANK YOU to those who helped to set up the open house booth, those who were there to take care of the booth and explain to them your experiences and the rest of you who made the effort to introduce the parents/ potential students to the booth. Oh and all the free labour that some of you gave to the student development team too. Good Job!!

(2) Briefing after contact time on wed (21 Jan 09)

Please stay back after contact time in the audi for a briefing and survey by the student development team. It shouldn't take too long. All of you need to be there. For those who cant please give your valid reasons.

(3) Photocopy of bank book

Well done for those who handed in you photocopies. I have to collect ALL photocopies before refunds can be processed. If you are those who havent handed in please do so quickly. Lest you get tortured by your team...

(4) Leadership week

There will be a leadership week (22-27 Feburary) which will co-incide with the TOOP exhibition so do get your photo essays ready if you do not want to be stressed during that time. Please approach the teachers to vet your final copies before you proceed with your group's exhibits.

hi friends!

ok this is a very big assumption- i believe if YOU are still updating yourself with the blog, it most likely means you still wanto be updated with lego stuff, conversly, do not.. thus narrowing my scope here.. i hope i'll be able to find a working comm by 20th jan.

the job scopes are endless. ok well there are only 2 kinds.. one is the planning comm whom would have to devote much time to the process (van and i hope to be able to compress the days till perhaps working really hard for one week then stop, and along the way do a bit too. but yunnan taught us the unpredictable, so be prepped for that too...)

the next is the facilitators, whom i like to address as ogls. we all know what the scope is... if you have other priorities and wish to sign up and help out anyway, WE NEED YOU.

just imagine what YOU could be doing. affecting young, impressionable (haha ignorant) minds with YOUR boundless experience in yunnan. don't you long to bare your souls and talk abt some china scars they left on you? dont you wish to relive The Moment?

(if i had usb ports to all your minds, i envision them nodding in absolute agreement.)

Open House Booth

Hi

I know this is rather late but we have a booth during open house so if we can we should have some exhibits to show what we have done.

Our Booths' Venue is at CR 111.
Set-up time for the booth is 10:30 am on Monday

The exhibition team leaders are Daphne, Chuwen and Chaiyong

Group Leaders pls note:
If possible do edit your photo essays and email them to me or the teachers. Its a team effort so do get the members to help if you have problems. We will most probably use the laptop to show the essays if there is no time for it to be prepared.

I need to know the list of people who can be available to set up the booth of monday and man the booth on tuesday. Leaders can you colate the names and let me know who are available. It is best if its you who went to the experience to share to be more impactful.

We can showcase anything all our materials, photos, fundraising items, including our T-shirts and pullover.

I know that most of you are chair persons, captains and exco members so we'll just try our best to do what we can in the short time span.

Reiterating the essence of our teaching system:

- one class per level, so we're teaching 6 classes in total
- about 40 students per class, more students in P1/P2
- the whole team is divided into 6 groups, each group taking 1 level (which means one class)
- each group will teach the class EVERYTHING, ranging from balloon sculpting to games
- a person-in-charge in each group, known as the Level Head (denoted by (L) in the groupings above)
- there're 6 subjects to be taught, namely Music, English, Health Education (further divided into smoking/alcohol/hygiene), Balloon Sculpting, Arts, Games
- for each subject there're at least two people in-charge. they are the ones who designed all the lessons. They are the Subject Heads
- when in doubt, Level Heads can approach the Subject Heads
- there'll always be a Subject Head "on duty" whenever the relevant subject is conducted

Hello!

With regards to the sleeping bag, if you want to purchase your own or are unable to borrow from the seniors, you can place your order with me (as mentioned by Yvonne in the email) by Wednesday. I'll be giving out an order form for this on Wednesday so if you won't be around, please SMS me (check contact list for number) or inform a friend to help you order. The sleeping bag costs around $50, but if we're able to get a bulk discount, it'll cost $37.

As for the backpack, I'll be ordering through the same shop in hope of getting a greater discount. As for the price, I have not called them to find out but will do so by Monday or Tuesday. This shop is Sports Connection (branches are at Parkway Parade, Tampines Mall etc). The backpack will probably be one of the usual brands like Vertical, Bodypac, High Sierra etc. But as Ms Tan mentioned in the email, it's not compulsory if you are able to lug your luggage up hills and stairs.

Hello guys! Updates as usual. This blog is getting rusty and probably because you guys are still not told of the change in the blog address yet. Nevertheless, i shall continue with the post.

Before the trip, I did not expect the trip to be much of the eye-opening one in term of exposure as I believed that the characteristics of the Yunnan would be mostly similar to that of my hometown which is also the rural area. However, I was wrong and realised that the trip was indeed very much beneficial and enriching. One thing that I have learnt from the trip is that the lifestyles, the environments, the cultures and especially the people of one place are certainly unique on its own. One can never be too prepared for a new environment especially in a foreign land, and therefore must possess an ability to adapt and certainly a mindset that is ready for change.
Life in rural area is definitely slower in pace and, from my point of view, has a much lighter atmosphere in term of stress. People, from what I observe, adopt a more care-free lifestyle especially those living further from the urban area. Restriction or legal rules that pose a significant impact on our lives here tend to be less influential there. The factors that really affect people are rather cultures and social manners. Therefore, it was very important that we, the visitors have to have the basic understanding of their cultures or at least their values. For example, the practice of “giving face” proved to be very vital when dealing with the locals. I have come across this when dining with the local officials when I learnt that it is not very suitable to treat the host in China.
I also learnt to keep an open mind not only for the place but also the people and their behaviours which usually differ or sometimes can even be seen as not so socially acceptable if based on our own context. Therefore, one preparation that I believe necessary for the visitors is that we must travel without a prejudice or our tendency to judge others. It is important for a visitor to understand that it is impossible for us to change their way of thinking or even practices. There is also a question to the values that is used to judge their practices. What is wrong for us might be right for them vice versa. One example is the smoking issue which is socially undesirable here but is indeed a norm in Yunnan. Hence, we are not able to point out certain things and state that it’s wrong simply because our values say so. We can only point out how we think or explain our “belief” to them which hopefully would prove beneficial to them in the case that we want to interfere. What I learnt to do is also to try to understand the reasons or at least the factors that affect their practices. This I believe will help us in adapting and make us learn new things at the same time.
Another thing that surprised me was the locals’ reaction to our presence. It seemed to me that it was not only us who were ignorant and curious about the other party. I have to admit went to the Yunnan with the expectation of seeing something different or even strange. However, as it turned out, as much as I have seen something different, I was also seen as something different or even deviant by the people there. From this I learnt to be humble and rid of the mentality that we are superior to the people there, including those that we are helping.
Lastly, it was my personal reflection to the issue of helping the people there that was triggered by the recce trip. My initial mentality towards the project is that we are going there to learn and gain experience. I did not fully believe that we could make an impact to those we are helping. However, upon seeing the people there and how well they embrace our help, I must say that it was very inspirational and I felt that we have to make a difference. I was told by a person that although our project’s direct impact might not be very large especially in the long run, we still can act as a catalyst for further improvement, bringing the problems to the larger pictures of other organisation or even the local authority. From this, I learn that it is crucial for the team to first believe that they can make a difference before they can give their full support and effort to the project.

Let's hope that we can all go to Yunnan together ASAP.

Those who will finish their exams on Friday will proceed to Miss Azyanti's house straight away after school and continue making the cornflakes until 8 pm. The group shall continue with that from 8am to 8pm each day till Sunday and will be responsible for delivering the cornflakes on Monday morning.

Those who will finish on Monday will go to Miss Azyanti's house straight away and continue to bake till 10pm. They will continue with the job at Joanne's house on Tuesday from 1pm onwards.

Note: Those who will finish on Monday will not have to do the job of delivering the cornflakes on Monday anymore.

The orders from the teachers for our chocolate cornflakes have come in and Ms Yanti said that there are lotsssss of them :D The orders are due on Friday (8Aug) so we have to make them this coming Thursday. " i am building my path to insanity"

i added a face to the lego figure.. so the infringement of copyrights part is addressed(i would think) ..but i dont really like the mouth. hmm..

i bet everyone is secretly hiding a nice lego figure they drew but sharing. anyhow, do post it if u are harbouring ur fine art.. we desperately need nicer pics that look diff from the current lego copyright, and nicer than the above. =]

(i learnt how to do upload pictures today). this post is just for fun and experiment with what we can do to mr lego's face. =]]

for the "building the future" part i was thinking we could come up with a tagline/slogan for our project? (well or maybe just "temasek overseas outreach programme")
